Boo at The Zoo

Matt and I have a have a family membership to the Indianapolis Zoo. We got it last spring and it really has come in handy for an inexpensive fun day out with the family. We get especially excited for the special events that the zoo puts on throughout the year. Boo at the Zoo is one of these events.

The zoo itself is decorated with fall and Halloween items. There are also characters wandering around the park. When we went there was a walrus dressed up as a wizard and a meerkat dressed up as a king. We tried to get Madison to take a picture with the "animals", but she wouldn't get near them. I will give her a little credit, because they were a little creepy.

We've been to the zoo so many times that we kind of pick and choose what exhibits we see and visit each time. Madison and Bradon both love the ocean exhibits so that's usually our first stop. Madison really could have spent the entire day petting sharks and watching the penguins. Bradon loved sitting in front of the brightly colored aquariums. Looking back we probably should have stayed in there.

We had decided to go to the zoo today, because it was nice weather. We had checked the weather and there was a chance for rain, but we had timed our visit for the clear part of the day. When we got to the zoo it was really busy and the sun was shining. After leaving the ocean displays we started walking toward the plains. There was supposed to be trick or treating on the paths through the plains. When we got to the plains we saw that the trick or treating stations had been closed due to the weather. At this point we are at the farthest point away from the exit and it starts getting cloudy. We then started to feel a few sprinkles and we are in a location that really doesn't have any shelter. Madison is getting a little upset that it is sprinkling. She is like a fish in the swimming pool, but absolutely hates rain. I'm not 100% sure why we didn't bring an umbrella, but if we had brought one it probably wouldn't have rained. Suddenly it starts to pour. Us and about 20 other people run for the 2 small pavilions with roofs in our location. We are completely soaked and being stared at by a Zebra. I'm pretty sure she was laughing at all of us, while she just stood there enjoying the rain. Bradon is fine in the stroller and dry for the most part. His costume was a great choice for keeping him dry and warm. Madison is crying and upset that we have to stand there. We stand there with a whole bunch of other people waiting for the rain to take a break. After about 5-10 minutes the monsoon stops and we start walking briskly to the exit. Matt and I were both completely drenched from blocking the rain from the kids. Did I mention that it got incredibly windy as the downpour started?

We managed to get out of the zoo without any more showers and the sun started shining as we were driving home. We stopped and got hot chocolate/apple cider on the way home. Despite the rain it was a a great trip and we are looking forward to our next trip to the zoo.
